DEFEXPO 2020 ‘Defence Mahakumbh’ Highlights

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Yogi Adityanath termed the DefExpo 2020 as ‘Defense Mahakumbh.’

In DefExpo 2020, 3,000 foreign delegates from 70 countries, 10,000 Indian delegates and 12 lakh visitors participated and made the event remarkably successful.

In DefExpo 2020, 1024 exhibitors have participated, including 172 foreign companies. Several government officials, diplomats and Defence Ministers from over 40 countries have also joined the event.

First India Africa Defence Ministers Conclave 2020 held in Lucknow on February 06, coinciding with DefExpo-2020. The full text of the declaration adopted at conclave can be seen here.

DefExpo 2020 witnessed the signing of over 200 partnership agreements and in the BANDHAN ceremony (MoUs signing ceremony) alone, more than 120 MoUs between DPSUs, private and global defence manufacturing companies have been signed.

Uttar Pradesh government has signed some 23 MoUs too which envisage Rs 50,000 crores investment in the UP Defence Corridor and would generate over 3 lakh job opportunities.

BANDHAN ceremony also witnessed the launch of 13 products including Light Utility Helicopter by HAL, Sharang 155 mm Arty gun by OFB among others.

During BANDHAN, Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) of India handed over 15 licenses for Transfer of Technology to 17 industries on DRDO developed technologies, mainly from the area of electronics, laser technology, armaments, life sciences, materials science, combat vehicles, naval systems, aeronautics, sensors, etc.

Some of these products are Mine Field Marking Equipment MK-II (MFME MK-II), e-Nasika, DMS HIDEN Fuel-I, Bi-Modular Charge System (BMCS), 500kg General Purpose Bomb, 250kg Pre Fragmented Bomb, Electronic Fuze for 81mm Mortar Bomb, Post Impact Delay Fuze for Air Delivery Bomb, Vehicle Mounted ECM System, IR Flare for CMDS, Process Monitoring of Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Moulding (VARTM), Man mounted cooling system, Optical Target Locater 600 (OTL 600), High Power Li-ion Battery Technology (HPLBT) and Combat Free Fall (CFF)  Parachute System.

The Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) also signed an MoU with DRDO for knowledge partnership and for boosting the development of the defence production corridor in Uttar Pradesh.

Information on DRDO Products that were displayed at DefExpo 2020

DRDO a major participant has highlighted over 500 indigenously developed products at DefExpo 2020. And for the branding and promotion of DRDO built products, out of 12 roads named in Defexpo site, 9 were based on DRDO designed and developed systems.

During DefExpo 2020, more than 22 seminars were held which covered a range of subjects related to technological changes, digital transformation of Defence and the policy improvisations of the Indian Government.

During DefExpo 2020, Tech Mahindra and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) announced a collaboration to jointly develop Digital Solutions for Aerospace and Defense sector. Both sides have also signed an for leveraging the next-generation technologies and the opportunities available in the domestic market and for tapping the defense export potential.

Indian Defence PSU Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has also signed a contract with the our Defence ministry to establish Phase-II of the Coastal Surveillance System or Chain of Static Sensors developed for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). 

The agreement includes setting up of 38 Radar Stations and 5 Command and Control Centres at complex and crucial geographical locations along the coast line of India, including Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. By establishing 46 Radar Stations and 16 hierarchical Command and Control Centres, BEL had completed the Phase-I of the project successfully.
